SWE is grounded in a simple belief…when neurodivergent young people are given real responsibility, clear expectations, and the right support, they can thrive at work.
Through our Summer Work Experience program, CNF partners with employers to design early work experiences that honor different communication styles, support individual access needs, and promote dignity, autonomy, and belonging.
Why This Program Exists
Many neurodivergent young people face barriers in early work experiences, including unclear expectations and limited opportunities to practice being a worker in a supportive environment.
SWE exists to help participants build confidence, learn workplace norms, understand their strengths and needs, and prepare for future employment.
Why It Matters
Research shows that early work experience is crucial for long-term employment outcomes. For many neurodivergent youth, getting a first job can feel overwhelming. SWE helps bridge the gap by pairing real work with real support.
Participants leave with increased confidence, clearer understanding of their strengths and challenges in the workplace, and resume-building experience. Employers gain practical tools for managing neurodivergent employees that often extend beyond the program. See below for 2025 impact:

In 2025, SWE supported 14 neurodivergent teens across 5 employer sites.

Community Partners and Looking Ahead
SWE is built through long-term partnerships with employers, schools, and community organizations.
Following multiple successful pilot years, SWE is now a core Canopy program, with plans to grow while maintaining individualized support and strong employer partnerships.
