Summer work for neurodivergent teens and young adults.
SWE is a paid, short-term work program for teens and young adults who identify as autistic and/or ADHD.
Participants build confidence, skills, and real world experience. Employers receive hands-on guidance to create inclusive, strengths-based workplaces.
What is the Summer Work Experience?
SWE is a paid, short-term work program for teens and young adults primarily those who identify as autistic or ADHD.
Participants work at local organizations for 2–8 weeks, taking on real responsibilities and contributing to their workplaces. Each participant is supported by a Workplace Success Coach, who provides resume and interview preparation, intermittent on-the-job coaching (as needed), and problem-solving support. Employers receive planning support and neuroinclusion guidance so expectations are clear.
Who the Program is For
Employers
SWE partners with employers who want to offer meaningful entry-level roles and build more inclusive workplaces. Canopy provides training, coaching, and ongoing support before and during the work experience.
Youth and Families
SWE is designed for neurodivergent youth, typically ages 15–21, who are interested in a paid summer job and building early work experience. Specifically, this program is designed primarily for those who identify as autistic or with ADHD and can work independently with occasional support from a workplace coach. Participants receive support with resumes, interviews, workplace expectations, and self-advocacy. Families are included as partners.
How the Program Works
Internship Opportunities
Upon successful application, participants are matched with local employer partners based on interests, availability, location, and fit. Work experiences last 2–8 weeks during the summer and take place during standard work hours. Participants are paid and complete meaningful, entry-level tasks.
Workplace Coaching
Each participant is paired with a Workplace Success Coach who provides preparation, on-site check-ins, goal-setting, reflection, and support with communication and self-advocacy. Coaches support participants to collaborate and partner with their supervisors.
Employer Partnership & Training
Employers receive planning support, neuroinclusion training, and ongoing coaching to support inclusive hiring, onboarding and supervision.
Community & Impact
SWE partners with educational institutions, businesses, and non-profit organizations across the greater Seattle area to create meaningful work experiences.
